Project

High Value Utilization of Coal Combustion By-Products
Funding Agency: Combustion By-Products Research Consortium (U.S. DOE/West Virginia University)

EIO is performing Research and Development to determine the capability of using both fly ash and bottom ash as a substitute for foundry sand in metal casting applications. Currently, silicosis is a target for the Occupational safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the substitution of fly ash for traditional very fine foundry sands will reduce the exposure of workers to this potentially hazardous condition. This project, being performed at EIO's Materials Development Center, includes benchmarking and demonstrating various uses of ash as molding and core sand.
