Advanced UltraSuperCritical Steam Boiler / Turbine Program
A new 5
year effort to focus on identified
candidate alloys to meet 760°C and 5,000
psi operating conditions in steam
turbine applications was initiated. This
project augments the $50Million U.S.
Department of Energy/Ohio Coal
Development Office program already
underway investigating boiler materials
and will conduct more detailed
evaluations of the weldability,
mechanical properties and reparability
of selected candidate alloys for rotors,
casings and valves and perform scale up
studies to establish a design basis for
commercial scale components. Efforts
associated with high nickel alloys will
be targeted for developing the specific
means of casting and fabricating using
electric arc/AOD; vacuum and/or pressure
casting and/or powder metallurgy
processes. A supplemental program funded
by the Ohio Coal Development Office will
undertake supporting tasks such as
testing and trials to define specific
metal casting techniques needed for
producing commercial scale components at
Ohio foundries.
